English to Chinese Translation

English and Chinese are very different languages as both the languages contain their own structure and complexities. The Chinese language is highly contextual and even slight changes in character composition can change the meaning of a phrase completely. This is why it is very important for any professional translator to fully understand the intended purpose of a sentence to avoid misunderstandings.

Chinese has about seven distinct dialects and many more local dialects. A piece of writing that works for a section of population may not work for others. Only translators with firm grasp of regional differences can be trusted to create quality work that produces the intended effect. A Chinese translator must be equally confident in their English language skills to avoid any loss of meaning in their translations.

Chinese language facts

A form of simplified Chinese was developed in the 1950s. Today, this system continues to be used in mainland China, while the traditional Chinese remains in use in some parts of China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

  • With nearly 1.2 billion native speakers worldwide, about 16% of the world’s population speaks Chinese as their native tongue.

  • Chinese is one of the six official languages of the United Nations, along with Arabic, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

  • Mandarin dialects are spoken by 71.5 percent of the Chinese population.

Chinese varieties and dialects

Chinese has many dialects and varieties and it is generally accepted to have 7 to 13 varieties.

Mandarin is the most commonly spoken dialect of Chines with about 960 million speakers. Mandarin is now also referred to as Standard Chinese and is the official state language of China, Taiwan and one of the official languages of Singapore.

Shanghainese is another important dialect of the Chinese language. Formed of a group of regional dialects spoken in places such as Shanghai, Suzhou, Ningbo and Wuxi, it has roughly 70 million speakers. With about 59 million speakers, Cantonese Chinese is also a main dialect of Chinese, spoken primarily in southeastern China (an area historically known as Canton), as well as by a large number of Chinese expatriates worldwide. Despite sharing some vocabulary, Cantonese and Mandarin are mutually unintelligible.

Vespucci Language’s native Chinese translators are experts in Mandarin, Shanghainese and Cantonese, making them fully equipped to ensure your content is perfectly optimized to reach the right audience.

Chinese translation tips

Traditional vs Simplified Chinese

In the mid-twentieth century, in an effort to improve the literacy rate, China began a process of simplifying written Chinese (Traditional Chinese). As a result, two versions of written Chinese came into existence: Traditional and Simplified. Although this sounds confusing, it is fairly straightforward to decide which form of the language to use based on where your target markets are located. Simplified Chinese is used majorly in Mainland China, Malaysia and Singapore, whereas Traditional Chinese is used in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Avoid machine translation

English and Chinese are completely different languages as they belong to completely unrelated language groups. Translation from and to Chinese there requires a great deal of creativity and knowledge which is not possible by using machine translation.
